What is Mindful Self Compassion?

Kristin Neff and Christopher Germer developed Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) as an evidence-based, heart-centered approach to meeting life with greater kindness, resilience, and awareness. Rooted in mindfulness and grounded in the shared experience of being human, MSC offers practical tools for navigating stress, self-criticism, overwhelm, and the tender realities of everyday life with compassion and care. Similar to the structure of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), this 8-week series includes nine classes total, including a retreat day, creating space for both learning and deep personal practice.

This course is open to anyone longing to deepen their relationship with mindfulness while cultivating greater self-acceptance, warmth, and inner steadiness. Together, we create a supportive and inclusive community where all parts of your experience are welcome. Our teachings are non-denominational, embodied, and accessible, honoring each person exactly as they are. Through guided meditation, reflection, gentle inquiry, and shared practice, students are invited to discover that compassion is not something we must earn — it is something we can return to, again and again, like wrapping ourselves in a warm embrace during this beautifully hard human journey.

This series is taught by Nikki Dvorak Larsen, LAc, EAMP, LMT, a Practicing MSC Teacher and Certified MBSR Teacher.

Who May Benefit

Mindful Self-Compassion is especially supportive for those who are ready to deepen their mindfulness practice and explore a more compassionate relationship with themselves and their inner experience. Many students come to MSC after completing Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) or developing a personal mindfulness practice, finding it to be a meaningful next step in bringing mindfulness into the heart. Because this course invites deeper reflection and embodied practice, some familiarity with mindfulness is encouraged — though it is never a requirement. Whether you are returning to yourself after a difficult season, longing for gentler ways to meet stress and self-criticism, or simply feeling called toward greater compassion and connection, you are warmly welcome here. This course honors the truth that every human being deserves care, belonging, and the opportunity to meet themselves with kindness, exactly as they are.
